Police have arrested a man who reportedly confessed to the murder of Francisco Gomes.
(ABRAJI/IFEX) – Brazilian journalist Francisco Gomes, known as F. Gomes, was shot to death on 18 October 2010, while sitting in front of his house in the city of Caicó, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte.
Police arrested a man on 19 October, who confessed to the crime. João Francisco dos Santos said he was afraid the reporter would write about his activities as a drug dealer.
The journalist worked for a newspaper (“Tribuna do Norte”) and a radio station (Rádio Caicó) and also had a blog ( http://www.fgomes.com.br ), where he used to write about crimes and political matters in his region. The police say the investigation will continue until there is no doubt that the man arrested on 18 October did not receive orders from a third party to kill the journalist.
