Toru Yamaji, head of the Tokyo-based APF news agency, was arrested for entering the country without a visa.
(RSF/IFEX) – Reporters Without Borders and the Burma Media Association hail the 9 November 2010 release of Japanese journalist Toru Yamaji, the head of the Tokyo-based news agency APF, who was arrested in the border town of Myawaddy on 7 November – the day of Burma’s general elections – for entering the country without a visa.
The two organizations have been assured by APF that Yamaji, who is in the process of being deported, was not mistreated by the Burmese authorities.
Meanwhile, two women reporters for the Burmese weekly “True News”, who were arrested near Rangoon the day after the elections, were released after being held for a few hours.
