(WiPC/IFEX) – 8 March 2011 – The PEN International Writers in Prison Committee (WiPC) caselist covering the six month period July to December 2010 is now available in print and on our website.
For the whole year January to December 2010, the WiPC monitored over 730 cases of attacks against writers, journalists, publishers and others in 81 countries. These include 39 killings and 219 long prison terms of which 148 were PEN main cases – those where it is clear that the reason for the arrest is linked to the person’s writings or legitimate and peaceful political activities. This year PEN’s WiPC also recorded over 100 releases, double the figure for the previous year, many of them Cuban writers and journalists who were freed from mid-year onwards.
The caselist provides brief summaries of all the cases recorded in the second half of 2010.
