Irmak Saader was found guilty of "making propaganda for the PKK" in connection with a number of articles and news items he had published.
(BIANET/IFEX) – 30 May 2011 – Journalist Irmak Saadet has been handed down prison sentences totaling 20 months as well as fines totaling TL 18,140 (approx. US$11,540) over several articles and news items published in “Yeni Yorum” magazine and “Ulkede Yorum” newspaper.
The Istanbul 10th High Criminal Court found Saadet guilty of “making propaganda for the PKK” (the militant Kurdistan Workers Party) and of “praising a criminal”.
Saadet is the owner and editorial manager of the weekly magazine “Yeni Yorum” (“New Comment”) and the “Ulkede Yorum” (“Comment on the Country”) newspaper.
The final hearing was held on 26 May. Saadet’s penalty was based on the Anti-Terror Law (TMY) and Article 215 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK) on “praising an offender”.
Saadet’s lawyer, Ozcan Kilic, has reportedly filed an appeal against the decision.
