Felix Nyaaba was violently assaulted by supporters of King Latse II at the Accra High Court for photographing the king and his entourage.
(MFWA/IFEX) – Supporters of Nii Tackie Adama Latse II, a rival king of the Ga State (Accra), on the morning of July 28, 2011 violently assaulted Felix Nyaaba, a court reporter for the privately-owned newspaper “The Enquirer” at an Accra High Court.
“The Enquirer,” in its July 29, 2011 edition, reported that the King encouraged his supporters, who were about ten in number and included Nii Ayibonte II, a popular football administrator known in his private life as Tommy Okine, to subject Nyaaba to “severe beatings that resulted in injuries to his ribs and face.”
The attackers also destroyed the journalist’s camera.
Nyaaba told Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) that he met his ordeal after King Latse II alerted his supporters to Nyaaba’s attempt to photograph them.
The police are investigating the matter.
BACKGROUND:
King Latse II and six others, including Nii Ayibonte II, have been sued for contempt by King Tackie Tawiah III, the Ga King whose eligibility they have been contesting at a regional chieftaincy court since 2006.
King Latse II and his supporters claim the chieftaincy court has been slow with the case. In May 2011, they disregarded the court and installed him as King. In response, King Tawiah III filed the contempt suit against them.
