(Abraji/IFEX) – Cameraman Gelson Domingos, 46, from “TV Band”, died on Sunday 6 November 2011 after being shot in the chest while covering a police operation in the slum of Antares, Santa Cruz, on the west side of Rio de Janeiro.
The Bandeirantes network, for whom Domingos worked, declared in a statement that the professional was wearing a bulletproof vest. However, the shot came from a rifle, which penetrated his protective gear.
Abraji mourns the death of the cameraman and reiterates the need for training for all professionals involved in the coverage of conflict situations. News organizations have the duty to provide every possible means to ensure the safety of its journalists.
Abraji urges the authorities in Rio de Janeiro to solve the crime and hopes that those found guilty of the crime be punished according to Brazilian law.
