IPI calls for thorough investigation.
(IPI/IFEX) – VIENNA, April 16, 2012 – A cameraman in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria, was killed by gunmen on Saturday evening at the home of a couple whose wedding he had been filming, local news reports said.
Chuks Ogu, 39, had worked as a journalist for the privately-owned Independent Television, the Leadership newspaper reported. He was killed when gunmen burst into the apartment of the newly-weds and opened fire, the Vanguard reported.
It was unclear what the motive for the attack was or if Ogu was the target, especially as nothing was stolen from the couple’s home, according to a report in the Daily Trust.
“Our heartfelt condolences go to the family of Mr. Chuks Ogu, his friends and colleagues,” said IPI Acting Deputy Director Anthony Mills. “We call on the Nigerian police to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation into this killing, and to determine whether the attack was related to Mr. Ogu’s work as a journalist.”
Ogu is the third journalist to have been killed in Nigeria this year, according to the IPI Death Watch.
