Golam Sarwar was threatened after reporting on negotiations between the government and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party over the case of a missing politician.

(Media Watch/IFEX) – On 23 April 2012, Golam Sarwar, editor of the Bengali daily Shamokal, received threats over the telephone from some unknown numbers. The threats were linked to his reporting that negotiations between the government and the Bangladesh National Party (BNP) were proceeding and the two parties were about to reach a deal over the rescue of missing BNP leader M Ilyas Ali.
“I received a number of threats on my office telephone throughout the day for publishing those reports on freeing Ilyas Ali,” Sarwar said on 24 April.
Since receiving the threats, the Shamokal editor has sought help from the police. On 23 April, Sarwar filed a general diary (GD) with the Tejgaon Industrial Zone police station in connection with the incident.
In his GD, the editor stated that some unknown individuals told him over the telephone that he would have to face dire consequences for publishing those reports on Ilyas Ali.
