(MISA/IFEX) – On Monday 20 August 2001, news editor of “The Zimbabwe Mirror” Wallace Chuma and reporter Constantine Chimakure were arrested and questioned by the Law and Order Section of the police about stories that appeared in the 17 August edition of “The Zimbabwe Mirror”.
The story in question relates to the looting of about forty farms in Mashonaland West, which took place on the weekend of 11 and 12 August. The story alleges police participation in the rampage orchestrated by a group of war veterans.
BACKGROUND:
This latest arrest of journalists comes after the arrest of “The Daily News” editor Geoff Nyarota, whose newspaper broke the story on 14 August (see IFEX alerts of 17, 16 and 15 August 2001).
Bill Saidi, the paper’s assistant editor, John Gambanga, the news editor, and Sam Munyavi, a senior reporter, were arrested on 15 August (see IFEX alerts of 17, 16 and 15 August 2001).
