(MRA/IFEX) – On May 1, 2012, the extremist Islamic sect, Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati Wal-Jihadl, otherwise known as Boko Haram, posted a video on YouTube in which it warned of more attacks on media organizations in Nigeria and named the media institutions that will be targeted in such future attacks.
The sect also claimed responsibility for the bomb attack carried out last week on the offices of ThisDay newspaper in Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, and posted on the same website recordings of the attack.
The 18-minute video named the media houses the group plans to attack next as the Voice of America (Hausa Service), Radio France (Hausa Service), The Guardian, Daily Trust, The Nation, Vanguard, Punch and Tribune newspapers, among others.
The YouTube video also showed its recordings of its bombing. The video was posted in the name Alhaji Mani.
On 11 March 2012, the sect threatened take measures against three newspaper houses for allegedly reporting what the group claimed it had neither declared nor said.
It claimed that some of the reports by the media were in favour of either government or security agents or both. On 26 April 2012, the group bombed the Abuja and Kaduna offices of Leaders and Company Limited, publishers of ThisDay Newspapers.
