(EFJA/IFEX) – The editor-in-chief of weekly sports newspaper “Kicker”, Yoftahe Tsegaye, has been sentenced to one month in prison. The editor-in-chief was charged by the Federal High Court with “publishing and distributing a newspaper without renewing his press licence.” The decision was handed down on 26 June 2001 by the Third Criminal Bench of the Federal High Court.
Tamrat Zuma, the editor-in-chief of “Atkurot” newspaper remains in an Addis Ababa prison because he has been unable to pay bail of 11,000 birr (approx. US$1,320). Four different charges were filed against Zuma for allegedly violating the press law. In its efforts to obtain the release of the journalist, EFJA has called on all concerned to extend their support. However, there has been no favourable response to the call so far. EFJA once again calls on all friends of the free press and international institutions to extend their support to obtain Zuma’s release.
The editor-in-chief of “Genanaw” newspaper, Tsegaye Ayalew, who was charged with violating the press law, was thrown into prison for failing to pay bail of 500 birr (approx. US$60). Through the cooperation of his newspaper’s editorial board, Ayalew was eventually released on bail.
