(FMM/IFEX) – The following is an FMM press release:
The Free Media Movement (FMM) welcomes the government’s decision today to lift the censorship of military related news. The move is long overdue. The government imposed the current censorship in November 1999 saying it was aimed at stopping the LTTE from receiving “military secrets” from stories published in the local media. The FMM has always opposed the enforcement of censorship, as we believe that the people have a right to know the real situation in the war and not merely sunshine stories put out by the government under the cover of censorship.
Although the government has not said why it has decided to lift the censorship at this particular time, the FMM hopes that it will not be re-imposed if the military situation escalates again.
