Newspaper vendor Fungai Dhori was reportedly assaulted by a group of three policemen in Harare who accused him of feeding NewsDay papers with “fictitious stories” about corruption in the police force.
According to The Standard weekly newspaper’s 23 February 2014 edition, the police allegedly forced Dhori into a Toyota Ipsum vehicle and took him to a secluded place near the Harare Show Grounds, where they reportedly took turns slapping him and bashed his head with a steel rod. The Standard is a sister publication to NewsDay, published by Alpha Media Holdings.
They then reportedly took him to the Harare Central Police where they charged him with “obstruction of justice” and fined him $20 before releasing him.
