(MISA/IFEX) – The “Zimbabwe Independent” newspaper has reported that one of its reporters, Brian Hungwe, was manhandled and threatened by the co-ordinator of the National Development Assembly (NDA) and former president of the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ), Kindness Paradza, on 16 December 2000. The incident was apparently provoked by an article in the last issue of the paper which claimed that the NDA was being financed by the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) party and the First Bank Corporation.
According to a report in the “Independent”, Paradza confronted the journalist at a local club and asked him why he did not seek his comment on the story. Paradza reportedly grabbed Hungwe’s shirt and repeatedly poked his finger at his face. He continued to manhandle him and threatened to beat him up.
Paradza apparently stated that he was not afraid of anyone and would even come to the “Independent” offices and deal with everyone there.
