INTERNATIONAL FREE EXPRESSION CHIEFS TO MEET
The three international guarantors of freedom of expression are to meet this week at a conference convened by ARTICLE 19, the Global Campaign for Free Expression. The three will be discussing their common mission – to monitor, report on and challenge abuses of the rights laid down under international, regional and national law.
Bringing the three chiefs together is vital to ensuring a coherent global strategy on freedom of expression. Abid Hussein from the UN, Santiago Canton of the Organisation of American States and Freimut Duve of the OSCE will meet tomorrow, Wednesday 29 November, and conclude the meeting Thursday 30 November.
This year’s meeting will focus on defamation, contempt of court and hate speech, as well as the promotion of new regional mandates in Africa and ASEAN. Last year’s conference proved to be highly successful, with the three agreeing on joint action on criminal defamation.
