(EFJA/IFEX) – Zegeye Haile, the vice president of the EFJA, and publisher of “Genanaw” newspaper, was arrested on 23 November 2000, by the Central Investigations Department (CID). The EFJA tried to make contact with him and with CID officials, but found it impossible to reach any of them.
During the past week, the editors-in-chief of three newspapers, including “Gohe”, “Abissinya” and “Mahlet”, were released on bail after making statements to the CID police. The Federal High Court has ordered Melse Shrine, editor-in-chief of “Ethip” newspaper, to pay Eth Birr 10,000 (US$1,200) in bail money. Shrine does not have the means to produce that sum of money, and therefore must remain in jail for the next two years.
