(IJC/IFEX) – The Sokoto state government has threatened to deal ruthlessly with the state correspondent of “The Punch” newspaper, Stanley Yakubu, for what it described as “continuous negative coverage of activities in the state.”
The director of press affairs to the state governor, Mallam Ibrahim Gidado, who personally threatened the reporter’s life on 8 February 2000, said the government was becoming increasingly disturbed by the journalist’s reporting style.
Gidado was reported to have threatened that “I have been sent by His Excellency to warn you to be very careful and put a stop to all the nonsense you have been writing about him and his government in the interest of your life or you may not live to tell the story…Please be informed that this is Sokoto and not your state. Here we can take good care of people like you easily.”
