(NDIMA/IFEX) – NDIMA is disturbed by reports of torture and inhuman
treatment meted out to two Zimbabwean journalists working for the “Standard”
newspaper, Mark Chavunduka and Ray Choto, after a lengthy and illegal
detention by security forces. Regardless of whether the story about the
discontent in the army was true or not, the journalists were entitled to a
fair trial and protection from torture according to Zimbabwe’s laws.
NDIMA is a Pan-African freedom of expression NGO. The organisation believes
that total freedom of the press is the keystone in the democratisation and
liberation of the African continent.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to the President:
Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which stipulate that no one shall be
subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or
punishment (Article 5) and, everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and
expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without
interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through
any media and regardless of frontiers (Article 19)
