(AJI/IFEX) – The AJI has received information about a case of violence by
local policemen against a journalist in Medan, North Sumatra province.
The victim is Berezatulo Bawamenewi, aged thirty, who is a journalist with
the “Sinar Medan” daily. Berezatulo was beaten and locked up by policemen on
Friday 3 September 1999, after he covered a demonstration by people from
Nias. After the demonstration, protesters tried to destroy the Nias resort
police station in Gunung Sitoli, Medan. Berezatulo took pictures of
policemen who beat up demonstrators. Afterwards, a number of policemen came
after the journalist, beat him up, and arrested him. He remains imprisoned
at this time at the Nias resort police station. According to the AJI’s
sources, the journalist is in terrible physical condition. He bears many
marks on his body from having been beaten.
