(IFJ/IFEX) – The IFJ is disturbed by the recent arrest of Tiberiu Patru, the
editor-in-chief of “Ora”. According to the IFJ’s information, Patru was
arrested while finalising a contract for advertising space with Sorin Sarbu
of the Romanian Federation for Democracy.
The IFJ believes that Patru has been arrested in order to silence his
newspaper, which has been involved in exposing local corruption. The IFJ has
reason to believe that his prosecution is not based on evidence of a crime
but rather is an attempt to prevent him from reporting freely.
The IFJ considers this to be an attack on freedom of expression in Romania.
