(CJFE/IFEX) – The editor of the newspaper “Le Potentiel” and president of
the non-governmental organisation Médias pour la paix (Media for Peace),
Modeste Mutinga Mutuishayi, was arrested by agents of the National Security
Agency (Agence Nationale de Sécurité, ANS) on 11 August 1999. The arrest
took place in the offices of “Le Potentiel” at approximately 3:00 p.m.
(local time).
The apparent motive for the arrest was the publication of an article in the
Monday 9 August edition of “Le Potentiel” (No. 1691) titled: “Scandal at the
Military Court last Friday. The incredible revelations of a part-time
secret agent.” The story concerned a trial which took place on Friday 6
August.
Mutinga was detained in place of journalist Nounou Booto, and taken to the
offices of the National Security Council, on Guma Avenue in the Mbinza Ma
Campagne neighbourhood (Ngaliema district). Two journalists – from the
newspapers “Le Phare” and “Soft” – are also being sought by ANS agents, in
addition to their editors.
