(IFJ/IFEX) – The IFJ is disturbed by proposed amendments to the 1996
Lithuanian
law on the media. According to the IFJ’s information, these amendments
propose the creation of a Media Protection Commission. The IFJ believes that
these amendments will permit censorship to be imposed by Lithuania’s
politicians.
The IFJ believes that self-regulation is the appropriate method for the
enforcement of ethical standards, and this was a process which Lithuania
seemed to have accepted in 1996. An important element of regulation is that
it should be independent of the control or influence of politicians and
heads of state. Under the current amendments, this would not be the case.
