(IFJ/IFEX) – Daniel Campos Rengifo, a journalist, the President of the Nueva
Cajamarca section of the Peruvian National Association of Journalists
(Asociacion Nacional de Periodistas de Perú) and the director of the “Eco
Informa” news programme on the local affiliate of “Radio F.V.C.”, was the
victim of an attack by an unidentified assailant at 7:00 p.m. (local time)
on 30 July 1999.
According to official reports, the journalist was on his way home, located
on the San Augustin passage in the Incas sector of the town of Nueva
Cajamarca in Rioja province (Department of San Martin), when he was
intercepted by an unidentified man who fired a short barrelled gun, hitting
Campos Rengifo in the right hip.
Campos Rengifo was taken to the town’s health centre where his injuries were
attended to. He was admitted to hospital bed No.15 and is reported to be
recovering from his injuries at this time.
Official reports say Campos Rengifo had been warning local residents,
especially those in rural districts, about charlatans and defrauders who
travel throughout the region. His published work is being considered the
motive for the attack.
