Media Release 5 August 1999
IFJ Safety Programme Launches Safety Office For Journalists and Media Staff
in East Timor
The International Federation of Journalists and two of its key Asian
affiliates – the Alliance of Independent Journalists in Indonesia and the
Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance in Australia – have opened a
solidarity centre to ensure the safety of all journalists working in East
Timor.
The Safety Office for Media in East Timor (SOMET) based in Dili has already
produced a guide for journalists working in or travelling to East Timor. The
office is able to provide help with accommodation, translators and drivers
for visiting media staff.
The Guide to East Timor, which is available from the IFJ’s Website at
http://www.ifj.org/hrights/sometguide.html, was produced by Heather Paterson
and Ezki Suyanto from the Safety Office. It includes information and advice
on getting to East Timor and fulfilling the various administrative
requirements, as well as giving useful contact details and medical and
logistical advice.
SOMET is at New Resende Inn, Jl. Avenida Bishop Medeiros, Dili, Tel: +62
(0)390 313 446, fax: +62 (0)390 313 393, e-mail:
somet@dili.wasantara.net.id.
The IFJ is the world’s largest organisation of journalists with members in
101 countries.
