(RSF/IFEX) – In a 6 August 1999 letter to the president, Colonel Abdullahi
Yusuf Ahmed, RSF protested the arrest of three journalists in the state of
Puntland. RSF urged him “to use his influence to ensure that the three
journalists are released immediately.” Robert Ménard, the organisation’s
secretary-general, added: “As far as we know they merely exercised their
right to inform. Our organisation reminds you that the Article 6.2.b of the
Charter for Puntland State guarantees freedom of expression.”
According to information gathered by RSF, on 2 August authorities ordered
the arrest of three independent journalists, Abulkadir Ali and Mohamed Deeq
of the newspaper “Sahan”, and Ahmed Mohamed Ali of the newspaper “Riyaq”.
The journalists are well known for their criticism of the Puntland
authorities.
