(IFJ/IFEX) – A new defamatory and satirical publication called “Repudio”
appeared on Monday 26 July 1999. The publication apparently forms part of
the smear campaign that was initiated a few months ago against the editor of
“La República” newspaper, Gustavo Mohme Llona.
The twelve page tabloid-like pamphlet features the same style of
sensationalist journalism as the “Repúdica” publication which first appeared
on 31 May (see IFEX alerts of 30 June, 16 June, 14 June, 8 June and 1 June
1999). However, the new publication is dedicated to insulting and
denigrating the political and personal lives of Mohme, the journalists who
work for “La República”, and the president of the Peruvian Workers
Confederation, José Luis Risco.
The two pamphlets, “Repudio” and “Repúdica”, have the same executive
director, Arturo Cáceres. “Repudio” lists Fidel Méndez as its
editor-in-chief and the direction of the publishing house “CM Ediciones” as
Gabriel Aguilar 695, San Miguel, where the Macedo family lives according to
a local newspaper. The same company also published “Repúdica” in a Chorillos
office owned by Claudio Miguel Maceda Saldarriaga.
Although no imitations of opinion columns or caricatures of individuals
opposed to the government appear in “Repudio”, the publication does contain
articles slandering Mohme and journalists Angel Páez and Edmundo Cruz.
The director of the “La República” newspaper accused the National
Intelligence Service of being responsible for the pamphlet’s publication.
Because of the ongoing harassment they have been subjected to, Mohme and the
journalists working for him will file formal complaints against “Repudio”‘s
editors and publishers.
