(CPJ/IFEX) – CPJ is expressing profound concern about the Monday, 10 May
1999, brutal attack on Saif al-Hadheri, the editor-in-chief of the weekly
“Al-Shumua'”.
**Updates IFEX alert of 14 May 1999**
At about eight o’clock on the evening of May 10, four masked men carrying
arms
stormed Hadheri’s home in the Naseer section of Sana’a and beat him before
fleeing the scene. Hadheri was taken to hospital and is currently recovering
from his injuries. While the precise motive for the attack remains unclear,
CPJ fears that it may have been in response to articles published in
“Al-Shumua'”.
It is CPJ’s position that such attacks against journalists, if unpunished,
will have a chilling effect on the ability of the press to function freely.
CPJ has stated that they will continue to monitor all developments with
regard to this case
