(RSF/IFEX) – On 12 May 1999, Stéphane Kitutu O’Léontwa, director of the
Union de la presse de République démocratique du Congo (Congolese Press
Union, UPC), was released after having spent four days in solitary
confinement at the judicial police offices in Kinshasa. The journalist had
been arrested and held instead of the individuals in charge of the satirical
newspaper “Pot Pourri”, which had been using the UPC headquarters’ address
as its official address without the organisation’s authorisation. Kitutu
O’Léontwa was not found guilty, but security services are still actively
searching for the individuals in charge of the newspaper “Pot Pourri”.
