**Updates IFEX alert of 18 February 1999**
Paris, 26 May 1999
Further to a thorough investigation by Journaliste en Danger, a Congolese
press freedom organisation, we have received confirmation that Oscar Kangoa
falsely identified himself as a journalist. This young man is imprisoned in
Kinshasa’s central prison. He fabricated a story, stating that he was a
journalist with the weekly Umoja and had been sentenced to a one-year prison
term for writing an article concerning the justice minister.
Reporters sans frontières regrets the error of having distributed false
information concerning this case. Oscar Kangoa sought to improve his
situation as a prisoner, benefiting from the few advantages which
journalists have in prison. Two journalists are still imprisoned in
Kinshasa, Thierry Kyalumba and Joseph Mbakulu Pambu.
