1999 RSF report entitled “Sierra Leone: black January for the press”:
**Updates IFEX alert of 4 May and 23 April 1999**
Conrad Roy, who had disappeared since January, has just died in prison.
Released during the rebel invasion, the former contributor to the “Expo
Times” had given himself up to the authorities after the departure of RUF
rebels from Freetown. Roy died at the Lakka hospital during the week of 26
April 1999, further to a bout of tuberculosis.
Christopher Coker, a journalist with the “Advocate”, is confirmed alive. He
managed to send a letter to the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists
explaining that he is being held by rebels, who are forcing him to work on
their behalf.
