(PPF/IFEX) – A journalist from the town of Kamalia (a remote town in Punjab)
was arrested and kept in the Jhang District jail by the district
administration, under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) law. Rana Amjad
Husain, who works for a news agency, was arrested on 17 April 1999 in
Kamalia under the order issued by the District Magistrate.
A meeting of journalists held on Sunday, 18 April, expressed concern over
the arrest and detention of Amjad. The journalists also signed a memorandum
in which they demanded that the deputy commissioner immediately release the
detained journalists.
