(RSF/IFEX) – RSF is protesting the assault of journalist Pavel Jeverdan in
Kichinev.
According to RSF’s information, on 13 April 1999, Jeverdan, an independent
journalist, was severely beaten by two unknown individuals in the yard of
his building. The journalist, 70, suffered numerous injuries and had to be
hospitalised.
The author of numerous articles focusing on corruption and the justice
system, Jeverdan was to testify in court on 14 April in the trial opposing
the newspaper “Nezavissimaïa Gazeta” and the company Petrolbank. According
to the newspaper, Petrolbank was guilty of financial fraud. The newspaper
stated that it has been the victim of intimidation and numerous threats in
connection to this matter.
