World Press Group Calls for Murder Investigation
The World Association of Newspapers has called for an investigation into the
murder of Nigerian journalist Bolade Fasasi, who was shot dead by three
unidentified gunmen earlier this month.
“The murder of a journalist is not only a tragic loss of life but the
ultimate form of censorship and a terrible blow to freedom of the press,”
the Paris-based WAN said in a letter to Oyo State Military Administrator
Ameh Oyakhire Edore that called for a “thorough and impartial”
investigation.
Ms Fasasi, who was killed 7 April in Ibadan, was the treasurer of the Lagos
State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists and a member of the
National Association of Women.
WAN, the global organisation for the newspaper industry, defends and
promotes press freedom world-wide. It represents 15,000 newspapers; its
membership includes 58 national newspaper associations, individual newspaper
executives in 90 countries, 17 news agencies and seven regional press
groups.
