(IFJ/IFEX) – Three Radio Marañon reporters, who have studios in the Jaen
province, in northeastern Peru, were attacked and intimidated by
anonymous
assailants.
**New cases and update to IFEX alerts of 22 March and 19 March 1999**
These acts are further to the Thursday 18 March 1999 attempt on the life
of
journalist José Luis Linares Altamirano, reporter with the same
broadcaster.
Linares was shot in the small intestine, in the left kidney and in his
left
hand. He is in a delicate state although his condition is improving. He
was
attacked by two hooded assailants (see IFEX alerts).
On Friday 19 March, between 10p.m. and midnight, assailants broke into
the
house of Homero Marín Salázar, Radio Marañon reporter. On Sunday 21
March
the house of Olinda Mori Díaz, reporter with the same radio station, was
broken into near dawn. That same early morning, there was a call made to
Radio Marañon, asking for Italo Salázar. The caller pretended to be a
family
member and persisted on asking for Salázar’s home. Salázar is from
Trujillo
and does not have any family in Jaen.
Marín and Mori said that the break-ins were of litttle economic value
(only
some coffee packaging bags, a bicycle and some clothes were taken), and
that
what really lies behind these acts is an intent to frighten them so that
they will not continue investigating and reporting on human rights
violations.
Mori has reported the break-in to the National Police division in Jaen.
