(IFJ/IFEX) – The IFJ is disturbed by the recent prosecution of “Kosova
Sot”
under the Serbian Information Law. According to the IFJ’s information,
the
paper’s publishing house, Interpress R Company, the publisher, Ruzhdi
Kadriu, and the editor-in-chief, Ibrahim Rexhepi, were all charged with
“fomenting religious and ethnic hatred.” They were convicted and the
publishing house was fined 800,000 dinars (approx. US$50,000) and the
individuals 400,000 dinars (approx. US$40,000) each.

The paper has not appeared on the news stands since 18 March 1999. Its
vendors have been threatened and told that the paper is banned.

Send appeals to the President:
attempts
to silence an Albanian language publication which has been commenting on
the
current situation in Kosovo

and to allow “Kosova Sot” to return to the news stands
