(IFJ/IFEX) – On Thursday 18 March 1999, Patricia Vasquez Salinas, a
journalist who worked at the Central Reserve Bank until 1992, denounced
that
she had been receiving death threats, as a result of her press reports
on
nepotism in the bank.
The threats were communicated over the telephone by persistent and
anonymous
callers calling the journalist’s home.
Vasquez is a graduate of the San Martin de Porres private University,
and
her case was made known on Friday 19 March in the morning paper
“Referendum”.
The newspaper also reported that the administrative manager of the
Central
Reserve Bank, Armando Arteaga Quine, had previously submitted a letter
to
the Lima Journalists’ College, “asking that drastic sanctions be
applied”
against the journalist for having reported on these nepotism cases.
On Wednesday 17 March, the Bank took out paid announcements in Lima
newspapers, explaining to the public that these acts of nepotism, as
they
had been reported in some media, did not constitute any infringement of
the
law. The announcements recognized that there are persons (working in the
bank) who have family links, but that they were hired before 1990
whereas
the law that punishes nepotism cases was created on 15 April 1997.
The denouncements made by Vasquez have been picked up by some members of
Congress, who have called for a report on these presumed acts of
nepotism.
