(RSF/IFEX) – RSF is protesting the detention of a journalist at a Kinshasa
military camp. According to RSF’s information, on Tuesday, 12 January 1999,
Thierry Kyalumba, editor-in-chief of the twice weekly newspaper “Vision”,
was arrested in Kinshasa. On 15 January, he was referred to the military
court, accused of “disclosing military secrets in wartime.” Under the pen
name Elvis Bumba, the journalist had published an article suggesting that
Uganda had purchased an important number of missiles intended for rebel
groups active in the Kasaï provinces (East of Kinshasa). Kyalumba is
detained at the Kokolo military camp in the Congolese capital.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to the President:
court,
whose decisions are final (defendents have no right to appeal), without
commenting on the details of the case
Mbakulu Pampu Diambu, is still detained, and awaits a decision by this same
court
released and that their cases are transferred to a civilian court
