(IFJ/IFEX) – The IFJ is shocked by recent developments in Burkina since the
death of Norbert Zongo. According to IFJ’s information, the authorities have
been attacking those who have been calling for investigations into the death
of Zongo and his companions. Tear gas and live bullets have been fired at
strikers or demonstrators involved in the campaign, various arrests have
been made and death threats have been issued against trade unionists and
human rights activists.
**Updates IFEX alerts of 22 December, 16 December and 15 December 1998**
These incidents have occurred in different places, and have targeted
different groups of protestors, including school children.
The IFJ considers that these actions on the part of the Burkina authorities
are in breach of international standards on human rights and are a direct
attack on the right to freedom of expression and opinion of the people of
Burkina.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to the Justice Minister:
in the investigation into those responsible for the death of Zongo on 13
December 1998
authorities to hold anyone responsible for these crimes
about
this death, and asking that he meet the demands for a thorough investigation
into these murders
