(EFJA/IFEX) – Melese Shine, editor-in-chief of the Amharic weekly newspaper “It’op”, has been charged with violating Article 10(2)(b) and Article 20/11 of Press Proclamation No. 34/85/EC and Article 480(1) of the Penal Code.
He has been charged with defaming the administrator of Ras Desta hospital, Melkamu Gettu, in an article published in issue 8/320 of “It’op”. The article’s author alleged that the administrator embezzled the hospital’s property and committed “administrative malpractices.”
Shine appeared before the Federal High Court’s Fifth Criminal Bench. The prosecutor objected to his request for bail. The court ruled that the editor should remain in custody until a final decision is pronounced.
The bail hearing had been adjourned to 2 May 2003. The case was adjourned a second time to 7 May. Shine remains in custody in Addis Ababa prison.
