(IAPA/IFEX) – In a 29 October 1998 protest letter, IAPA expressed concern at
the detention of three journalists who were covering a story in the province
of Misiones. Police officers arrested Emilio Petcoff, Enrique Sdrech and
Mario Sacchi, all journalists with Buenos Aires-based Channel 3 television,
on 24 October. Police never explained the reason for the arrest. The
journalists were released two hours later.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to the Interior Minister:
journalists’ ability to carry out their jobs freely and effectively —
requirements for press freedom and, ultimately, democracy
which states that “the imposition of obstacles to the free flow of news, and
restrictions on the the activities and movements of journalists directly
contradict freedom of the press”
since an incident like this can create a precedent and, consequently, a
hostile environment for the press in Argentina
