(WiPC/IFEX) – On 21 October 1998, Amnesty International issued an update on
the cases of the “Tous” journalists in which it reported on the release of
one of them. The text of the Amnesty Urgent Action is as follows:
**Updates IFEX alerts of 9 October, 8 October, 23 September, 20 September,
16 September, and 4 August 1998**
“Hamid Reza Jalaipour, one of four journalists arrested on 16 September,
following the banning of the daily newspaper “Tous”, was released from
custody on 13 October, pending further investigation of the charges against
him. Amnesty International
continues to fear, however, for the well-being of Mashallah Shamsolva’ezin,
Mohammad Javadi Hessar and Ibrahim Nabavi, who remain in detention.
Shamsolva’ezin and Nabavi are reportedly in poor health as a result of the
harsh conditions of their detention, which amounts to possible ill-treatment
and torture. Shamsolva’ezin is believed to have developed kidney problems
and Nabavi has nervous problems of an unspecified nature. In a press
statement given after his release, Jalaipour reportedly stated that he and
his colleagues had been held in solitary confinement and had been subjected
to “indirect psychological torture.”
