(RSF/IFEX) – According to information made available by RSF on 30 July 1998,
on 29 July 1998, the regional prosecutor, Ms. Kety Bozukova, blocked the
bank account of the weekly regional newspaper “Sedmitza” in Sliven
(southeastern Bulgaria). Bozukova called for a fine of 1 million levas
(US$600 dollars) against the newspaper after the publication of an article
criticising her work.
Recently, the newspaper was fined for 10 million levas (US$6,000) for
“libelling” Eva Jetcheva, the vice-president of the parliamentary group of
the ruling party (not previously covered by IFEX).
The newspaper was also fined following a complaint by three local
businessmen who called for 35 million levas in compensation.
