(IPYS/IFEX) – The following text was signed on 25 June 1998 by 200
journalists present at a meeting, organised by IPYS in Lima, aimed at
expressing solidarity with journalists who are threatened in Peru:
**This press release updates information contained in IFEX alert of 18 June
1998**
The journalists endorsing this statement declare our concern over various
attacks, known and unknown, which our colleagues have been the victims of in
recent months, several of whom who have been forced to leave the country or
take security measures.
We declare our solidarity with them and repudiate these attacks, whatever
their sources may be. We wish to put on record that, even though the
majority of us perform our jobs in normal conditions, and without viewing
ourselves as limited by press freedom abuses, we consider that we are hurt
by an attack on any journalist, and we especially repudiate the attacks
which have come from an apparatus of the State, which in a democratic
society is obliged to protect the rights of all citizens.
