(IPYS/IFEX) – On 22 June 1998, a session in the city of Piura to assess the
developments in the investigation into the murder of journalist Isabel
Chumpitaz will see the participation of representatives of the Committee to
Protect Journalists, Reporters sans frontieres, Freedom Forum, Periodistas
of Argentina as well as the Buenos Aires daily “El Clarin”. The meeting,
organised by IPYS, is also aimed at expressing solidarity with journalists
who are threatened. The meeting will also express concern for these
journalists to the Peruvian government and for the state of independent
journalism in Peru.
The meeting will include interviews with President Alberto Fujimori, other
leading officials and with journalists; a public act of solidarity with the
independent media; as well as a teleconference session with journalist Jose
Arrieta and Canal 2 television owner Baruch Ivcher, both of whom live
outside of Peru due to government pressure.
