(Free Expression Ghana/IFEX) – On 29 May 1998, Ghana’s immigration
authorities invited Dee Roberts, a journalist of Liberian nationality, to
their offices for questioning. This appears to be in connection with an
earlier operation in which two other journalists, Bunmi Aborisade and Lewis
Asubiojo, were picked up and released only after posting a bail bond of 1.5
million Cedis each. It is not yet clear, however, whether Roberts was asked
to put up a bail bond.
**Updates IFEX alert of 29 May 1998**
The journalists have since been reporting daily to the authorities.
Meanwhile, there is a widespread belief that an attempt is going to made by
authorities at deporting the affected journalists. In view of this fact,
Free Expression Ghana, calls on members of IFEX, as well as the
international community, to launch a campaign of appeal to the Ghanaian
authorities to refrain from any such intended acts.
