(RSF/IFEX) – According to information released by RSF on 11 May 1998, Ana
Zarkova, a well-known journalist with the daily newspaper “Trud”, was
attacked at a bus stop near her home in a Sofia residential district. An
unknown assailant splashed her with acid, burning her face, left eye, neck,
and arms. She is seriously injured and remains in hospital under police
guard. Zarkova has written about organized crime and corruption in Bulgaria.
This is not the first time a “Trud” journalist has been targeted. On 17
January 1998, the “Trud” office in Sofia was the target of a bomb attack.
Nobody was injured. Earlier this year, “Trud” journalists received several
phone threats.
