(CPJ/IFEX) – On 4 May 1998, Moussa Tchangari, publishing director of the
independent weekly “Alternative”, was arrested by presidential guards
shortly after reading a statement on Radio Anfani condemning the regime’s
actions to intimidate and censor the press. The statement was a joint
petition issued by officials of the private media and correspondents of the
foreign press in Niger. Mr. Tchangari was transported to the presidential
camp where he is currently being detained.
Gremah Boucar, director general of Radio Anfani, shut down the radio station
in anticipation of its closure by authorities and in fear that military
authorities might attack the premises destroying equipment and arresting
employees as they did on 1 March 1997. The station’s broadcast facilities
are currently under occupation by security officers.
General Ibrahim Bare Mainassara’s office has ordered journalists not to
broadcast news related to opposition activity because “it might increase
political tension.”
