(PINA/IFEX) – The Pacific Islands news media will meet in the French
Polynesian capital, Papeete, at the 19-22 October 1998 Pacific Islands News
Association (PINA) convention. This follows discussions between the PINA
Secretariat in Suva, French Polynesian news organisations and the
territorial government. The PINA convention constitutes the main annual
meeting of the news media from 21 Pacific Islands countries and territories.
It brings together senior executives and journalists from radio and
television stations, newspapers and magazines, national associations,
regional organisations and those involved in training and education. One
full day of the convention will be devoted to freedom of information and
expression issues, and will feature keynote speakers, country reports, panel
discussions and study groups. Also scheduled is the presentation of PINA’s
annual Pacific Freedom of Information award.
The French Polynesian delegation to last year’s PINA convention in Port
Vila, Vanuatu, won the bid to host the 1998 convention. It underscored
PINA’s efforts to strengthen links between the news media of the
English-speaking and French-speaking Pacific. PINA has also moved from being
a mainly English-speaking organization to one in which the region’s two main
languages, English and French, are used equally.
