(CPJ/IFEX) – On 31 April 1998, Minister of Information Julius Spencer
accused journalists of the newspaper “Punch” of collaborating with the
ousted junta. This accusation was announced on the radio and on television
broadcasts throughout the nation and is in connection with an article
printed in the 29 April 1998 issue of the paper entitled, “Guinea refused to
hand over A.K. Sesay on orders.” A.K. Sesay was the Secretary to the
Chairman of the recently ousted junta group.
This same story was carried by the newspapers “Vision” on 25 April 1998, and
“Standard Time” on 1 May. So far neither newspaper nor their journalists
have faced accusations by the government.
