(PINA/IFEX) – PINA members in 21 countries and territories of the region will
commemorate World Press Freedom Day with a campaign called “Media Freedom
Is Your Freedom.” Television and radio stations and newspapers will
broadcast and publish material produced by the PINA Secretariat in Suva as
part of the lead up to
the 3 May 1998 event.
In interviews conducted by PINA, leaders from Pacific Islands governments,
regional organizations, news media and communities explain why media
freedom is
the right of all people to be informed and to express themselves. The PINA
campaign is designed to stress that media freedom, and Article 19 of the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights, are for all people.
PINA’s efforts have been helped by the United Nations Educational,
Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Office for Pacific States, in
Apia, Samoa.
Audio and video tapes and printed material have been produced in the two main
regional languages of the Pacific Islands, English and French. As well,
“Media Freedom Is Your Freedom” posters and stickers have been
printed, and a special media freedom kit produced for schoolchildren.
